About the Bennett Institute for Applied Data Science

The Bennett Institute for Applied Data Science sits within the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences at the University of Oxford. They take huge datasets and turn them into traditional academic research papers; but also build live, interactive data-driven tools and services for everyone to use. They are a mixed team of software developers, clinicians, and academics; they pool skills, knowledge, and best practice from each of these three disciplines. They use modern, open methods, sharing all analysis and platform code online to support reproducibility, trust, and efficient re-use. When encountering technical, regulatory, or organisational blockers to the better use of data, they don't give up: they share practical policy insights, to help keep things moving for everyone.

The team have built a revolutionary open-source platform for secure clinical research. Conceived at the start of the COVID-19 crisis, it has been used extensively to produce ground-breaking research using an unprecedented corpus of patient data which is not available anywhere else.

Vacancy Openings

  • Several software engineering openings exist at both junior and senior levels.
  • Applications are sought from individuals who are passionate about software development (especially web applications). Roles are suitable for candidates in either front-end or back-end development. Roles will focus on implementing (and maintaining) key features, data structures and protocols that power the OpenSAFELY platform.
  • Candidates at junior level should possess exceptional academic qualifications, ideally a first in a STEM discipline, together with confidence in coding (irrespective of commercial experience or otherwise)
  • Candidates at mid-senior developer level, should have robust coding experience. PHP ideal.
  • One role at senior level, will be involved in contributing to the technical direction of the platform and blends hands-on software development with collaborative decision making.

Tech Stack

  • Python / Django / Javascript / React / Docker / Postgres / SQLite / HTMX

OpenSAFELY is a new secure analytics platform for electronic health records in the NHS, created to deliver urgent results during the global COVID-19 emergency. It is now successfully delivering analyses across more than 58 million patients' full pseudonymised primary care NHS records, with more to follow shortly. All our analytic software is open for security review, scientific review, and re-use. OpenSAFELY uses a new model for enhanced security and timely access to data: we don't transport large volumes of potentially disclosive pseudonymised patient data outside of the secure environments managed by the electronic health record software company; instead, trusted analysts can run large-scale computation across near real-time pseudonymised patient records inside the data centre of the electronic health records software company. This pragmatic and secure approach allowed us to deliver our first analyses in just five weeks from project start.
